| October 17, 2017 1:00 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — The Lt. George Farragut Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution invites students in grades five through 12 to participate in two different essay contests.

The topic for students in grades five through eight is “World War I: Remembering the War To End All Wars.” Students are to imagine they are living in 1918, stating where they are living and how the end of the war will impact their daily life.

The Christopher Columbus Essay Contest is open to ninth to 12th-grade students. The topic is “Advantages and Disadvantages of Working Relationships Between Foreign Parties.” Students are to discuss why monarchs from one country would be interested in hiring an explorer from a foreign country.

Both contests are open to students in public, private or parochial schools and homeschoolers. Teachers are encouraged to integrate the contests into their curriculum.

Certificates will be issued to all who participate. Monetary awards are given to the chapter winners from each grade in the American History contest and to the chapter winner for the Christopher Columbus contest. First place winners advance to the state competition.

The deadline is Dec. 15, 2017. Participants are encouraged to contact Luella Stilley at 208-665-5959 or email Lt. George Farragut Chapter at ltgeorgefarragut@gmail.com for more information and specific requirements.
