CROSS COUNTRY

NIXC runners shine: USA Track and Field held its Junior Olympic Pacific Northwest XC Championships at Woodland Park in Seattle last Saturday.

The Pacific Northwest Region is comprised of more 700 runners representing 31 teams from Washington, Idaho and Oregon. Under the coaching of Erin Lydon Hart, North Idaho XC fielded the largest team in its history and, for the first time, qualified all 33 athletes for the USATF National XC Championship to be held in Tallahassee, Fla., on Dec. 9.

The runners competed in distances from 2 kilometers to 5 kilometers depending on age. Runners who placed in the top 30 in each race advanced to the national championship as well as teams who finished in the top 5 in each race division.

Top 30 finishers for North Idaho XC included:

2 Kilometers (ages 7-8)

4th place: Olivia Abbey in 8:48 minutes.

10th place: Sam Mandel in 8:48 minutes.

12th place: Jasmine Gutierrez in 9:08 minutes.

19th place: Alistair Smith in 9:17 minutes.

Wrestling clinic nears: The Coeur d’Alene Recreation Department will co-sponsor with the North Idaho College wrestling team a wrestling clinic for kindergarten-through sixth-graders.

Registration is Dec. 4-29 or until the clinic is full. Registration will take place at the Coeur d’Alene Recreation Department, 710 Mullan Ave. This clinic offers five sessions of instruction with a tournament at the end. The clinic will take place Mondays and Wednesdays in January. Cost is $35. A free wrestling T-shirt will go to all kids enrolled in the program.
