Longtime NIC Trustee Judy Meyer to resign

NIC Trustee Judy Meyer, who has served on the board for 22 years, submitted her letter of resignation at the regular board meeting Wednesday. At the meeting, Meyer said she was proud of how NIC has grown over the years to serve North Idaho and “NIC is on a solid course.”

“Now is the time for me to step aside and let others lead to the next level,” Meyer said. “Outstanding and dedicated people at NIC are at the core of the college. I thank the board, the students, the administration, the staff and the faculty for their commitment to make NIC such a special place.”

Meyer’s resignation will be effective Jan. 31, 2018. She said that although she is resigning from the board, she will stay involved in other capacities and “You will still see me around.”

NIC President Rick MacLennan said Meyer will leave a notable legacy. She and her husband, Steve, are longtime volunteers and generous supporters of the college. Steve serves on the NIC Foundation Board of Directors.

“Judy has given her heart and soul to NIC. Her dedication and love for the college can never truly be replaced,” MacLennan said. “Judy’s forward thinking, compassion and insight have influenced every aspect of North Idaho College. She has been a driving force in guiding us to where we are today.”

In Meyer’s five terms, she saw NIC experience a significant increase in enrollment and growth from her first term in 1990. She was an instrumental leader in the college acquiring and developing land for the higher education campus, enabling better collaboration with the University of Idaho and Lewis-Clark State College. Meyer was a champion for the dual-enrollment program, the future joint-use facility, the NIC Parker Technical Education Center and the Meyer Health and Sciences Building, which bears her and Steve’s name. In 2005, Steve and Judy donated $1 million to NIC, which remains among the largest donations in the college’s history.

“Judy’s lifelong commitment to education coupled with her collaborative leadership approach has positively impacted NIC and our entire region. We thank her and we wish her well as she makes more time to explore the world and spend time with friends and family,” said Rayelle Anderson, NIC director of Development and Foundation executive director.

Meyer has lived in Coeur d’Alene for 49 years as a business woman and community volunteer. In addition to her many years as an NIC trustee, her public service includes time on the Idaho State Board of Education (as appointed by the governor), the Blue Cross of Idaho Board of Directors, the Community Library Network Board, the Idaho State Historical Society, the Idaho Business for Education Board, the Idaho Public Television Board, the Coeur d’Alene Chamber Education Committee, the Hospice of North Idaho Board of Directors and the Coeur d’Alene Chamber of Commerce Board, among others.

“Judy is a brilliant woman who means so much to me as a role model and mentor in public service. After decades of giving, it is her time to enjoy other things in life. I will miss her immensely,” said NIC Trustee Chair Christie Wood.

A timeline and process for appointing Meyer’s replacement is being developed. Letters of interest from potential trustees residing in Meyer’s Trustee Zone 4 will be solicited. A map of the five NIC trustee zones can be found online at www.nic.edu/board.
