H. Sid Fredrickson, 71

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our husband, father, and grandfather, H. Sid Fredrickson, 71, on Nov. 13, 2017. Sid was born in Richmond, Utah, on Dec. 17, 1945, to Haldo and Velda (Burbank) Fredrickson.

His family moved often while he was growing up and he spent time in Alaska, Utah, Wyoming and Montana. He graduated from high school in Dillon, Mont., in 1963 and went on to graduate from Western Montana College in Dillon. He met his wife, Birdee, in Columbia Falls, Mont. and they were married on April 5, 1969. His daughter, Misty, was born in 1971 while living in Troy, and his son, Quint, was born in 1974 in Kalispell.

Sid taught math and science for a few years in Troy and Valier, Mont., before moving to a career in engineering. He worked for the Morrison-Maierle engineering firm in Kalispell, Mont., from 1973 to 1983. He worked for the city of Whitefish from 1983 to 1985 before moving to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. He became the superintendent of the Street Department for the City of Coeur d’Alene in 1986, and then became the Wastewater Superintendent for the city in 1990. He retired after 30 years with the city in December 2016. He also spent 10 years as part of the Coeur d’Alene School Board and he was very honored to serve.

Sid loved aircraft and flying and found a way to enjoy both of these by joining the Civil Air Patrol. He spent many years as part of the CAP and earned many awards during this time. He earned the Commander’s Commendation Award in 1984 and 1989, the Meritorious Service Award in 1986 and 1989, and the Grover Loning Aerospace Award in 1985. Through the CAP, he was able to chaperone a trip to England in 1989. He thoroughly enjoyed his time with this organization.

Sid loved guns and shooting and in recent years had started shooting with his grandsons. He was also beginning to get back into HAM radio operating and had passed several tests needed to become certified. History and science were of high interest to him and he never let an opportunity go by without sharing this knowledge with someone.

He was very proud to be part of the Pacific Northwest Clean Water Association and used his position in wastewater to help promote clean water practices. He was extremely honored to receive the 2016 Local Gem Award for his leadership and efforts to protecting the Coeur d’Alene Basin’s water quality. He loved giving tours of the wastewater plant and teaching others about the science behind it and the innovations put into place to improve water quality.

Sid was preceded in death by both of his parents and grandparents. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Birdee (Coeur d’Alene); his children, Misty and Lanny Lemburg (Coeur d’Alene), Quint Fredrickson (Coeur d’Alene) and Theresa and Paul Knott (Williston, N.D.); grandchildren, Colt and Sierra Fridley (Lewiston), Justin and Matt Fridley (Coeur d’Alene), Dylan and Chase Fredrickson (Coeur d’Alene), Skyler Fredrickson and Lina (Cusick, Wash.), Jacob and Joshua Atkisson, Samantha Borley and Gabe Hoekema (Williston, N.D.) and great-grandchildren, Beau Fridley (Lewiston) and Renly Fredrickson (Cusick, Wash.). He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

He was an amazing man and will be dearly missed by so many. A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18, 2017, at the First Baptist Church in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
