Grand views in Cd'A's Woodland Heights

It seems like it should be Dalton Gardens or even Hayden, but Woodland Heights is Coeur d’Alene. Wherever it technically is, the views and vibe of the long-established neighborhood are unrivaled.

Heading north, you need to drive through Dalton Gardens on 15th Street to get there (be sure to drive 25 mph). As you drive up the hill from 15th and into Woodland Heights, you might assume it was north enough to be considered Hayden.

But no, it’s Coeur d’Alene, and the 16-year-old version of me is still confused by the whole thing. In school, many of us “regular house” Coeur d’Alene kids had an alternate name for the houses on the hill north of 15th Street. We called it “snob hill,” because, well, their houses seemed way nicer than ours.

Now with some maturity (and much clearer skin), I am able to appreciate Woodland Heights as a highly desirable neighborhood that has very little overt snobbery. If anything, Woodland Heights is pretty affordable for the views, home and lot sizes and convenient proximity to town amenities.

Realtor Chris Ferro of Windermere probably knows the appeal better than most. In addition to selling numerous homes in the Woodland Heights, she also calls the neighborhood home.

“There’s a little more elbow room — all the lots are a little bigger,” Ferro said. “It just feels more private and open just because of the topography and how the subdivision is laid out.”

Wildlife and natural green areas populate the spaces between homes. Several turkeys were seen roaming as I drove through this week, and Ferro said deer, quail and other animals are common and give the neighborhood more of that natural North Idaho feel.

“And within a minute, there’s Albertson’s and other businesses; everything is around the corner, but you feel very private. It’s a really great location,” Ferro said.

Many of the homes in Woodland Heights can be around 40 years old, though everything was custom built at the time and most are larger size homes. Ferro said the ages of homes makes for an interesting assortment of properties, as many have been redone and updated to varying degrees.

The views are gorgeous, with many looking down on Dalton Gardens and Coeur d’Alene (though not “looking down” in a way, say, a snob would).

Ferro knows the terminology some of us punk kids have used about Woodland Heights, but she is always eager to show clients around the neighborhood to squash the reputation and show off the quality of available properties.

“Just come look up here,” she said. “It’s a unique little place.”

Ferro said homes start in the high $200,000 and can go up from there depending on size, views and remodel work. Available and recently available homes in the neighborhood include a four-bedroom, 3.5-bath home with more than 3,200 square feet listed at $400,000. Another three-bedroom, three-bathroom home with just under 3,000 square feet was listed at $379,000. As of this week there was also a lot available to build on listed at $105,000.
