SCHOOLS: Keys to success

| March 11, 2017 12:00 AM

Because of my position as a Representative in the Idaho Legislature and member of the House Education Committee, I am often asked, “What is the one thing we can do to improve our educational system in Idaho?” My response to that question is always, “I wish it was as simple as ‘one’ thing.” If we are realistic and honest about the topic, we probably all recognize that our educational system is incredibly complex, with an incalculable number of factors that influence the success of our schools and students. Strong parental involvement, highly talented and influential teachers, and innovative and stimulating curriculum are areas in which most of us agree are important for student success.

Another question I often receive, “Is funding the answer to improving education in Idaho?” My response is always, “No, it is not the answer, but it is part of the answer.” Successful schools and the resulting well-educated students they prepare pay incredible dividends in our communities for years to come. There are a significant number of studies that show successful schools help to improve the economic vitality of our communities, improve the long-term health and happiness of individuals, and increase the civic engagement of citizens.

We are blessed to live in a community with great schools, talented teachers and respected administrators, but we should never take for granted the active investment and engagement required from citizens to have a great school district. On March 14, Coeur d’Alene voters will be asked to continue our investment in future generations through a supplemental levy and facilities bond for the Coeur d’Alene School District; I am voting “Yes” on both measures and I encourage you to vote in favor of both at the polls.

REP. PAUL AMADOR
