LAKELAND: Writer in error

| March 11, 2017 12:00 AM

I would like to write a brief rebuttal to refute the claims of letter writer Jerry Larson about Lakeland School District. Larson claimed Lakeland promised laptops for in-coming ninth-graders in its last three levies. This assertion is false. The letter writer is confusing the failed Students Come First Initiative from the state with our district goals.

As a teacher, I can tell you it is a priority to increase technology. For example, just in the last few years LHS has added five, new mobile computer labs for student use. Beyond this, our school library is open both before and after school and during lunch to provide students with additional opportunities to access technology they may not have at home.

As to another claim in that letter, teachers are not provided any type of cell phones by the district. We personally pay for any cell phones and service we wish to have.

I believe facts are vitally important when it comes to deciding significant voting issues, so please base your vote on facts that can be supported by evidence.

Before I close, I would like to thank voters in our district who proudly support Lakeland by voting yes on levy and bond issues. Without your support, our students would miss out on the assortment of offerings we provide both inside and outside the classroom to meet the varied needs of our diverse student population. Thank you for prioritizing our schools!
