Northern Lakes splits to open tourney

SPOKANE — Northern Lakes bounced back from a 3-2 loss to host Gonzaga Prep to open the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene Fourth of July Wood Bat Classic on Friday with a 9-3 victory over the Juanita Baseball Club, also at G-Prep.

Against Juanita, Dustin Smith drove in three runs for the Mountaineers (18-7), two on a fourth-inning double. Logan McDonald hit a two-run single in the first.

Against Gonzaga Prep, Ryan Pote walked and scored on an error in the eighth inning to put Northern Lakes up 2-1. But Prep scored twice in the bottom of the inning without an out for the win.

Pote hit an RBI double in the sixth for Northern Lakes to tie the game at 1.

Today, Northern Lakes is scheduled to wrap up pod play vs. Calgary at 10:30 a.m. and Sherwood Park at 1 p.m., both at Gonzaga Prep.

POST FALLS — Jacob Elliott’s RBI base hit capped a three-run seventh inning as the Cardinals beat the Spokane Cannons 5-4 in their first game of the day at the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene Fourth of July Wood Bat Classic at Post Falls High.

“We hit well, and (Brock) Zeller kept us in the game all day,” Prairie coach Pat Call said.

In the second game, Prairie fell to Edmonton 5-4.

“We hit well but walked 11 which killed us,” Call said. “Our offense is getting better each day; we are making the transition to a contact team which will pay dividends later this season.”

Prairie (8-10) is scheduled to play Northwest Premier today at 8 a.m. and Billings at 6 p.m., both at Post Falls High.

Lums fall twice in wood-bat openers

COEUR d’ALENE — The Lumbermen lost 5-2 to the Great Falls Chargers and fell 7-3 to Bellingham on the first day of the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene Fourth of July Wood Bat Classic at Thorco Field.

Against Great Falls, Jack Bloom singled to lead off the fifth, and scored on Brett Keesee’s single for Coeur d’Alene. Riley Alley singled and scored on Bennett Cunningham’s sacrifice fly to pull the Lums within 3-2.

In the second game, Matt James hit a two-run homer to highlight a five-run first inning for Bellingham.

Kallen Langley had two hits for the Lums, and Brady Thompson drove in two runs.

The Lums are scheduled to play ICL at 8 a.m. and the Spokane Crew 19U at 6 p.m. today, both at Thorco Field.
