Farragut Disc Golf Club monthly tournament

BAYVIEW — The Farragut Disc Golf Club’s second tournament of the year at Farragut State Park hopes to be drier than the first.
The club will host its second of five PDGA-sanctioned C-tier one-day tournaments on the third Saturday of each month that FDGC board member Ben Squires said will accommodate players of all skill levels.
“We’re really trying to promote participation of all skill levels,” Squires said. “It can be an inexpensive introduction to the sport for people that have never played a tournament before.”
The “Farragut Fling’s” $35 entry fee applies to all PDGA members, $45 otherwise. Amateurs will receive a player’s pack that includes at least two discs of their choosing. The top three finishers in all divisions win trophies.
Squires said the “Farragut Fling” offers a big advantage for experienced players.
“Cheap sanctioned rounds at a local course help pros build their PDGA rating,” Squires said. “It’s a friendly competition for everyone else not competing for cash.”
Each “Farragut Fling” will offer a morning and afternoon round on the same course. Participants will compete on the Wreckreator course in this tournament.
A disc golf clinic will proceed the event.
Up to 90 players can register for each event at pdga.com or at the course on the day of the event from 7-8:30 a.m.
Area athletes selected in
final day of MLB Draft
Washington State redshirt-junior pitcher Damon Jones, junior third baseman Shane Matheny and junior pitcher Colby Nealy were selected in the Major League Baseball Draft Wednesday.
Jones was taken in the 18th round by the Philadelphia Phillies, Matheny was selected in the 23rd round by the San Francisco Giants and Nealy was taken in the 35th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Cougar signees Isaiah Smith (OF, 21st, Kansas City) and Jack Smith (INF, 39th, Seattle) were also selected.
Jones, taken the No. 533 overall selection and the seventh pick in the 18th round, posted a 3-3 record in 16 appearances including 13 starts. The lefthander from Twin Falls, struck out 41 hitters in 68.2 innings and led all Pac-12 pitchers with six pickoffs.
Isaiah Smith, taken No. 630 overall and No. 15 in the 21st round, was ranked by Baseball America as the No. 75 top high school prospect in the country and the ninth-best high school prospect in Washington. Smith, an outfielder, attended Battle Ground High School in Battle Ground, Wash.
Two more Gonzaga baseball players were selected on the final day as Tyler Frost and Jeff Bohling both went early in the day.
In the 15th round, the Chicago White Sox selected Frost with the 12th pick of the frame. Frost has been Gonzaga’s starting center fielder nearly every day since coming to campus in 2015. A junior now, he started 153 career games in the field, also earning the nod six times on the mound as a freshman. The Phoenix, Ariz., native has shown plenty of pop at the plate, hitting 19 home runs and 43 extra-base hits for a .452 career slugging percentage. This year, Frost hit .284 and drove in 38 runs while scoring 41 himself, leading the team with nine homers as well.
Bohling went in the 17th round to Colorado. The Bellevue native hit .270 during his senior season, driving in 26 runs and scoring 26 runs.
Among Lewis-Clark State College selections were: shortstop Micah Brown (19th round by Miami), pitcher Kevin Hamann (22nd round by St. Louis), reliever Henry McAree (29th round by Miami), infielder Seaver Whalen (32nd round by Tampa Bay), designated hitter/first baseman J.J. Robinson (33rd round by Minnesota) and catcher Cooper Goldby (35th round by Oakland).
