Shippy, a junior infielder from Lake City High, was named the Big 12 Conference Spring Athlete of the Year for softball, the conference announced. The conference established its Scholar-Athlete Award in 2012-13 and a recipient is named in each conference sponsored sport. Nominees must be a junior or senior in athletic and academic standing, have a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher, participate in at least 60 percent of the team’s scheduled contets and have a minimum of one year in residence at the institution. Shippy led the Cowgirls with a .398 batting average paired with 48 runs scored and 46 runs batted in on her way to being named an All-American for the second-straight season. She was honored as a first team selection to the All-Big 12 team. Off the field, Shippy was named an Academic All-American and Academic All-Big 12 first team selection for the second consecutive year and is the first Cowgirl to be named a two-time Academic All-American and two-time All-American. She was also named Big 12 Player of the Year in 2016.

Community Colleges of Spokane track and field

Wright, a sophomore from Lake City High, recently signed a letter of intent to compete in track and field at Utah State University. She finished second in pole vault with a height of 12 feet, 3 1/4 inches at the Northwest Athletic Conference Championships on May 22-23 in Gresham, Ore., breaking her own school record. The CCS women’s team went on to win the conference championship. Wright, a two-time All American, finishes the year ranked second in the nation for Junior College women pole vaulters.
