Water lovers, share your splash of blue

| June 6, 2017 1:00 AM

Today is one of those amazing days in North Idaho when the air is dry and warm, the sun is shining and everything just sparkles. So I am compelled to get outside to get my “Splash of Blue.”

Today it will be to make sure my walk takes me along the lake for a few blocks so I can see that expanse of shimmery water reflecting the wispy clouds above.

Probably many of you living in Coeur d’Alene and the surrounding area are here because of the draw of the lakes and rivers that are all around us. Our family moved here in the ‘70s because of the promise of fishing on the Coeur d’Alene River, camping at Priest Lake or canoeing from Sanders Beach. We took our turn at owning a motorboat and lately have tried a stand up paddleboard (with mixed results). It was recreation that the water allowed that drew us here and has kept us here in this community.

We love that it literally takes minutes to be near or in the water that is all around us. We also appreciate that our city has made this access a priority with the recent announcement of their intention to purchase the old Atlas property on Seltice Way for a park and public access to the Spokane River. It’s the water that defines our area and makes it so desirable for residents, businesses and tourists alike.

How do you usually get your “Splash of Blue”? The Friends of the Spokane River Corridor is starting a community campaign to raise awareness of the importance of the lakes and rivers in all of our lives. Let’s not take these amazing resources for granted! Send a letter to the editor of this paper or visit the “Splash of Blue - Coeur d’Alene” Facebook page to tell your story.
