Special season continues for Lums 17U
NAMPA — Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen Single-A coach Pat Capone called his team a special group on Saturday.
That group has got an opportunity today to do something really special.
David Kraak pitched five scoreless innings and Zach Sensel closed it out as the Lumbermen beat the Nampa Braves 5-0 in a state semifinal game Saturday night at Rodeo Park, clinching not only a berth in today’s championship game, but a spot at the Northwest Regional tournament starting on Thursday at Swede Johnson Stadium in Eugene, Ore.
“It was the biggest game of David’s young career, and he stepped up big time,” Capone said. “It was just a huge win.”
The Twin Falls Blackhawks and Nampa Braves will play a loser-out game today at 9 a.m. PDT, with the winner advancing to face the Lums at noon. Both teams advancing to the championship game qualify for regionals.
“They’ve got to beat us twice,” Capone said. “We’re kind of in the driver’s seat now.”
Devon Johnson, Elijah Samaha and Sensel had two hits each, with Samaha driving in three runs for Coeur d’Alene (46-11).
“This is a special group of young men,” Capone said. “They’re the perfect example of what happens when 15 players and three coaches come together with one common goal. We wouldn’t be here without all of the guys having bought into what we’re trying to do. It’s a tribute for all their hard work they’ve put it.”
