Coeur d’Alene is spotlighted as a summer escape for running enthusiasts in the latest issue of Runner’s World magazine.

The article features eight “under the radar destinations ... with killer trails, sumptuous eats, and burgeoning running cultures.” Each one-page feature covers the subjects of where to run, who to run with, where to refuel, and where to stay. Some of the other areas the magazine features are Bishop, Calif., Glacier National Park, Fayetteville, Ark., and Mystic, Conn.

The article touts the Lake City’s reasons for being a desirable running location as the Centennial Trail, the mountains and lakes we are surrounded by, and the Ironman Triathalon.

So where should one run? The article and accompanying photo spotlight Tubbs Hill as our “running gem.”

Coeur d’Alene’s Fleet Feet Sports owner Garth Merrill told Runner’s World: “It’s probably one of the nicest urban parks anywhere. The outer nature trail is 2.4 miles around a peninsula of wilderness just steps from downtown.”

The Trail Maniacs are the “who to run with” in the article. They are a local running and mountain biking club that organizes runs and races all year long throughout the Northwest. There are about 180 official members of the club, but the public is always welcome at events. The Maniacs are also charity-minded, donating some race proceeds to local school cross country teams and working on local trail maintenance projects in conjunction with Washington Trail Association.

Daft Badger Brewing Company is mentioned as a “pet friendly craft brewery and restaurant in midtown” and part of a thriving beer scene.

“It wouldn’t be a Northwest resort town if bars and taverns weren’t situated on nearly every block,” the article claims.

Where to stay? The Coeur d’Alene Resort is the clear choice, according to Runner’s World.

The magazine, which publishes 11 times a year, is read in more than 18 countries and reported a general circulation of 710,618 in 2012.
