Phillip Wendell Champagne, 87

June 30, 1930 – July 21, 2017

Phil Champagne, 87, passed away at his home Friday, July 21, 2017. Phil was a man of mystery, elegance and charm. And for some, this won’t be the first time they’ve read his obituary.

He was born in Seattle, Wash., on June 30, 1930, to Eli and Anita Champagne. Phil was the second of three sons. He is preceded in death by his younger brother, John Robin Champagne, and is survived by his older brother, William Mitchell Champagne.

Phil joined the military at a very young age and became a Merchant Marine. He then married and had four children. In 1982, his family was shocked when it was reported that Phil had fallen from a boat and was declared missing at sea. His life took many twists and turns from there, leading to a book written about him in 1995, and even making the front page of the Coeur d’Alene Press.

Previously, in 1986, Phil met the love of his life, Barbara Fraley. They spent the next 31 years together, and he helped raise all five of her children: Terena, Rich, Ken, Jerry and Leanne. He was the best father anyone could have ever asked for.

There are too many stories to tell here. Phil lived a full life, and was full of love. Those who knew him will tell you that he had a special spark, a twinkle in his eye, and he was very intelligent. Phil will be missed by many, and his jokes and laughter will be remembered by all.

A viewing will be held at from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, July 30, 2017, Yates Funeral Home, 744 N. Fourth St., Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. The funeral date is to be determined.
