Lums come up short in state AA opener

TWIN FALLS — Coeur d’Alene put the tying and go-ahead runs on second and third with one out, but were unable to come up with the clutch hit late, as the Lumbermen lost to the Mountain View Toros of Meridian 2-1 in the opening round of the state AA American Legion baseball tournament on Wednesday at Skip Walker Field on the campus of the College of Southern Idaho.

“We just didn’t do enough or get a clutch hit,” first-year Coeur d’Alene coach Kevin Dunton said. “We hit the ball right at guys, and just didn’t get the breaks you need to win a baseball game. We were looking for some key hits, and didn’t get it today.”

Justin Bates allowed seven hits, striking out five for Coeur d’Alene (14-23), which faces the Boise Gems (27-12) today at noon in a loser-out game. Tournament host Twin Falls beat the Gems 11-7 in Wednesday’s late game.

“Justin was wheeling and dealing and just pitched fantastic,” Dunton said. “Late in the game, we had a chance and didn’t get it done. In the state championships, there’s a pressure factor that’s not there in the regular season.”

Matthew Gjevre singled to score Brett Stapleton in the ninth inning for the team’s lone run.

“We battled back and had the go-ahead run in a position to score,” Dunton said. “It’s a tough loss to swallow. We had our chances and it came back to haunt us.”
