- STATE AA TOURNAMENT

They’ve been up.

They’ve been down.

But the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen AA American Legion baseball team is back in familiar territory, albeit with a new lineup.

Coeur d’Alene (14-22) opens the state AA tournament today against Mountain View at noon PDT at Skip Walker Field on the campus of the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls.

Of the roster, only Bennett Cunningham returns from last year’s team which finished fourth at state in 2016. Brett Stapleton is the team’s lone graduating senior this year.

“Getting to state is an accomplishment,” first-year Coeur d’Alene coach Kevin Dunton said. “Experiencing it is going to be something that’s big for this team. Especially one that’s so young.”

Of the other teams that qualified for state, Coeur d’Alene beat Treasure Valley 3-2 in the opening game of the Boise Summer Classic on July 6.

“Getting there is something to build on for next season,” Dunton said. “For us, it’s important to play well and build for next year. I’m excited to go down there with this group.”

The Boise Capitals, who had won the past two championships, failed to qualify for state.

Coeur d’Alene had lost four straight games before beating Prairie in the Area A (district) tournament last Friday to qualify for state for the 12th time in 13 years.

“Hopefully we’re ready to play to our best if we can,” Coeur d’Alene catcher Conner Conigliaro said. “If we show up ready to play, we should be pretty well set.”

Lewis-Clark (32-9), winners of the Area A championship, opens against Meridian (18-13) today at 3 p.m.

The winner advances to the Northwest Regional tournament starting Aug. 2 in Missoula.
