Coeur d'Alene repeats as 'A' district champs

COEUR d’ALENE — Devon Johnson drove in six runs and Brandon Gay knocked in five as the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen won their second straight American Legion baseball Class A Area A (district) title Sunday, downing the Orofino Merchants 13-7 in the championship game at Thorco Field.

Both teams had already qualified for state, which begins Thursday at Rodeo Park in Nampa. Coeur d’Alene (43-11) is scheduled to open vs. the Twin Falls Blackhawks at noon PDT.

Gay hit a grand slam to cap a five-run third inning that boosted Coeur d’Alene’s lead to 6-1.

Johnson hit a three-run double in the fourth inning and a two-run double in the fifth, and also earned the win on the mound.

Michael Dooley hit a solo homer for the Lums in the second.

LYNDEN, Wash. — Coeur d’Alene managed just two hits in a six-inning loss to Lakeside Recovery on Sunday at Lynden High in the second round of the Washington state class A Legion baseball tournament.

Riley Smith and Wiley Luckett each had a hit for the Lums (34-11), who drop into the losers bracket today at noon at Lynden High against an opponent to be determined.
