Coeur d'Alene 'A' punches ticket to state

COEUR d’ALENE — Luke Hicks had two hits and two RBIs and Carter Friesz allowed one hit over four innings, leading the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen to a 9-5 win over Orofino in the class A Area A tournament on Saturday afternoon at Thorco Field to a berth in the state tournament next week at Rodeo Park in Nampa.

Coeur d’Alene (42-11) will face the Orofino Merchants today at noon in the district championship game.

Zach Sensel and Mike Dooley also had two RBIs each for Coeur d’Alene.

Kolby Brink hit a three-run home run for Orofino.

Later Saturday, top-seeded Northern Lakes defeated Moscow in a loser-out game, then was eliminated by a 13-6 loss to Orofino. The Merchants clinched a berth to state with the win. Northern Lakes finished 28-21.

Lums 16U opens

state with win

LYNDEN, Wash. — Landen Thompson went 2 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI as the Coeur d’Alene 16U squad beat Capital 5-4 at Lynden High in the first round of the Washington state class A Legion tourney.

Wiley Luckett hit a two-run double in the third inning for the Lumbermen (34-10), who play Lakeside Recovery today at 3 p.m. at Lynden High in the second round of the 16-team tourney.
