Farragut Fling finds a new champion

The Farragut Fling has crowned its second champion, but the tournament’s previous victor might have felt like a bigger winner after last weekend’s competition.

Prodigy Disc’s Jared Person shot 9-under during his first round of play at North Star, finishing 15-under to cruise to a three-stroke Open division victory.

“I feel really good,” Person said. “It’s the best I felt all year.”

This is Person’s second victory of the season. He also won the Queen City Classic in April by 15 strokes, though he said he’s been plagued by injuries since then.

This is the first time runner-up Ben Squires has not won a Farragut Fling, though he probably won’t lose much sleep over it. Squires hit the club’s $312 ace pot by acing hole No. 6, which measures 383 feet.

For the first time the Farragut Disc Golf awarded a disc golf basket as a prize to the club member who ended with the best score in a randomly selected amateur division. Chris Dixon’s 1-over earned him both the first-place title in Advanced Masters and an Innova disc golf basket.

Dixon, along with Person and Squires, was one of four players who shot at least one round of -3 golf or better. The fourth, Sai Par Ananda, won the Open division for women and finished -1. Jeff Cowley (Advanced) and Sterling West (Intermediate) both won their divisions by shooting -1.

Bryce Wakefield also shot -1 in the Intermediate division, however he was penalized two strokes and finished at +1 for not submitting the correct score on his scorecard. Dani Petersen won the Intermediate Women division by shooting +28.

In the Recreational divisions, Andy Gregory shot +13 for the men and Tara Nelson shot +49 for the women to win.

Grandmasters — Mike Wallace +17

Senior Grandmasters — Jeff Krum +6

Junior Boys (under 15) — Ethan Hebert +25
