TAXES: One-way delay

| July 16, 2017 1:00 AM

On behalf of all property taxpayers of Coeur d’Alene, I offer “A Modest Proposal” (apologies to Jonathan Swift). I propose that the city of Coeur d’Alene delay the due date for payment of property taxes by at least three weeks. And maybe more.

Why, you ask? Well, I paid my not insignificant property tax bill in June and as of today (July 13), my check remains yet to be deposited by the city’s financial officials. Clearly, they must not have needed my money, so why not just ask for it a little bit later?

Parenthetically, how in good conscience does the city threaten late fees if property taxes are not paid on time? Just saying.
