Lewis-Clark takes two, AA league title from Lums
COEUR d’ALENE — Luke White hit a three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning of the first game as Lewis-Clark swept the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen 5-2 and 5-4 at Thorco Field on Saturday, giving the Twins the AA North Idaho League title and top seed to this week’s Area A district tournament at Post Falls High.
“They were some really close games, and both could have gone either way,” Coeur d’Alene coach Kevin Dunton said. “They were two hard fought battles.”
Conner Congiliaro and Bennett Cunningham had RBIs in the first game for Coeur d’Alene (13-20, 4-4 NIL), which will be the second seed to districts.
Brett Stapleton allowed four hits over seven innings, striking out five in the opener and Justin Bates struck out four in the second game for Coeur d’Alene.
“Brett threw a really good game, and so did Justin,” Dunton said. “It just came down to some plays that weren’t made. Baseball’s a game of inches, and it was a couple of close ones today.”
Coeur d’Alene could have clinched with a win in either game.
Riley Alley hit a two-run double to tie the second game at 4-4 for Coeur d’Alene.
“We just strung some hits together and had a good inning to get back into the game,” Dunton said. “I thought we had some momentum going, and they did a good job of stopping it.”
Lewis-Clark is 28-9, 5-3.
