Rathdrum Days: Boredom buster

RATHDRUM — “I’m bored! What is there to do?”

It’s the story of your summer, isn’t it? Already visited every local park in your general vicinity? Watched everything worth watching on Netflix? Then beat summer boredom this weekend at the 38th annual Rathdrum Days celebration.

Touted as “Three Days of Ultimate Family Fun!” festivities start Friday at 5 p.m. on Main Street with a classic car cruise, street dance with live music by Nu Jack City, beer garden and food vendors, and a bouncy castle and games for the kids.

Help support the Rathdrum area’s first responders at the community breakfast on Saturday morning from 7:30 to 9:30, at the Masonic Lodge on the corner of McCartney and Second. 

The fun commences on Saturday morning, with a kiddie parade beginning at 9:15, followed by opening ceremonies and the annual parade beginning at 10:30 a.m. Keep your eyes peeled for the Junk Drawer Troubadour, a “one-kid variety show” and “master of multitasking.”

After the parade, meander over to the junior high school to watch as a flash of stumpy legs and flying tails barrels toward the finish line at the weiner dog race, beginning at noon. Also at the junior high will be the Lions Classic Car Show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

New this year is a soccer competition with four divisions — Adult (18 and older), High School, Junior High and Youth. Skill events include dribbling, juggling, shooting and passing. The event is from noon to 6 p.m. at the Rotary Field.

Lakeland High School will be bustling with activities all day Saturday, too, with plenty of food to choose from and a variety of vendors and local craftsmen offering goods to buy, live music, Big Wheel races at 1 p.m. and a magic show from 3 to 4 p.m.

If you’re still looking for some fun and entertainment on Sunday, join the community at Lakeland High School for another round of festivities.

One highlight will be the Strong Man/Woman Competition at 11 a.m. Watch as locals compete in four categories — arm-over-arm, farmers walk, tire pull and the truck pull. If you’re looking to get a little competitive yourself, try your luck at the watermelon-eating competition at 1 p.m.

The Dick Frost Comedy and Magic Show wraps up the weekend festivities from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday.
