Lums bounce back for split with Lewis-Clark
LEWISTON — In a game they needed to win, the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen started hitting.
And hitting.
And hitting.
After losing 11-1 in the opener, the Lums battled back to beat the Lewis-Clark Twins 12-2 in the nightcap in Class AA North Idaho League play at Harris Field.
Coeur d’Alene (13-17, 4-2 NIL) leads Lewis-Clark (25-9, 3-3) with a doubleheader set for Saturday at Thorco Field. Prairie is 3-5 in the three-team league.
“We just had to have a short-term memory,” Coeur d’Alene coach Kevin Dunton said of his team’s win. “We needed to go out and swing the bats, and that’s what they did.”
Brett Stapleton and Bennett Cunningham had three hits each for the Lums, with four others collecting two apiece in the second game.
“Once we got rolling, everyone got behind it,” Dunton said. “It was a good effort all-around. It was a game we needed to play well, and we did.”
Tanner Mueller allowed one earned run in the second game for Coeur d’Alene.
Earlier, Riley Way, Alex Light and Nate Savoaine had two RBIs each as Lewis-Clark jumped out to a 9-1 lead after three innings.
“We were down right out of the gate after the first inning,” Dunton said. “They’re too good of a team to get behind on.”
Coeur d’Alene will host Missoula in a single game at Thorco Field on Thursday at noon.
