DEPOT: Wrong attitude, friend
Mr. Crouch’s complaint letter about Home Depot not recognizing his form of veteran’s identification could be better resolved with a letter to Home Depot explaining his situation. All of us need to remember that Home Depot is not under any obligation to provide discounts to veterans. They do this, one presumes, out of a sense of patriotism. We appreciate that kindness.
We are not entitled to discounts by virtue of our military service.
Companies choosing to give discounts to veterans choose the parameters of those discounts. Veterans discounts could be designated in so many ways. It could be active duty only, or active duty only and their family members. It could be active duty and reserves and guard and/or family members. Any veteran who served one enlistment and/or family members. It could be retirees and/or family members. It could include members of all the uniformed services (of which there are seven, Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, U.S.P.H.S. and N.O.A.A.).
From a store management standpoint, the clerks need guidance on corporation policy and there are times when the unusual situation presents itself. A little patience and a little humility can go a long way. For me and most of the veterans I know, we do not feel as though we are owed anything. If we get special recognition and/or discounts we do appreciate it. Placing Mr. Crouch’s letter into perspective, think of the thousands upon thousands of discounts already given to veterans at the store he shopped at. Thanks Home Depot and all those who do this extra act of kindness.
