Michael Duane Engelby, 70

Michael Duane Engelby, 70, of Cataldo, Idaho, died July 8, 2017, at Schneidmiller Hospice House in Hayden, Idaho. He was born Feb. 23, 1947, in Minnesota. He was raised by his mother, Evelyn Louise (Cartwright) Rea and his stepfather.

Mike and Karen (Downey) met and married in Colorado. They moved to the Coeur d’Alene area in 1966. They owned and operated the Blue Lagoon Tavern. Mike and Karen cleared more than 300 miles of trails for the Idaho Forest Service. Mike shoed and broke horses, trapped muskrat and hunted big game. He owned Engelby Excavating and Construction in Medamont, Idaho. After the accidental death of his daughter, Melissa (13 years old), Mike started teaching hunters safety to help others gain knowledge of how to properly house and handle a gun and did this for many years.

He is survived by a granddaughter, Kristina Hemming; a grandson, Shawn Engelby and great-grandchild Sara Hemming. He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather; a daughter, Melissa Engelby; a son, Duane Engelby and another daughter, Amey Best.

Their will be a potluck picnic at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, July 15, 2017, at the Rose Lake Historical Society, to remember and celebrate the life of Mike Engelby.
