COEUR d’ALENE — The Cancer and Community Charities (3Cs) Appropriations Committee conducted its annual meeting Friday in sweltering heat on the deck of Sally Cannon's Coeur d'Alene home.

For the ladies of the 3Cs, it was worth the sweat — they'll be gifting $113,550 to 28 different charities this year, the most they've ever given away in the benevolent group's history.

"This year is hotter than usual, but by golly, they hung in there like troopers," said Cannon, who has served as the Appropriations Committee chair for eight years. "They got through it."

The 12 committee members reviewed more than 30 applications and engaged in more than four hours of debate and discussion to finally decide on the 28 Kootenai County nonprofits that will receive portions of the funds.

"The day went well," Cannon said. "It's really interesting. Everybody fights for their charity and we sometimes have to take money away from here and put it there, but we always come together as a group and finish our agenda, so it works."

The 3Cs is an organization of ladies who volunteer their time and money through several events and activity groups throughout the year. Their groups range from gardening to bowling, and their annual events include a fall festival and a fashion show. 3Cs has bestowed more than $2 million upon local nonprofits since its inception in 1962.

"It's fantastic," said 3Cs President Barbara Newland. "I'm just the president, these girls do all the work. I'm really proud of them. And the activity chairs, they work so hard."

Grant award letters went in the mail Friday and the funds will be distributed Aug. 18 at the 3Cs Appreciation Lunch in The Coeur d'Alene Resort where recipients will be announced.

"I feel very good to give out that much money this year," Newland said.
