Chain reaction I-90 crash snarls traffic

| July 1, 2017 4:28 PM

COEUR d'ALENE — A crash on Interstate 90 blocked traffic east of Coeur d'Alene in both directions for about four and a half hours today, according to Idaho State Police.

The crash occurred 4 miles east of Coeur d'Alene near the Yellowstone Trail overpass at 10:24 a.m.

According to ISP, Russell Maggio, 82, Henderson, Nev., was eastbound in a 1984 Ford Econoline van when the 2007 Forest River camp trailer he was pulling started to fish tail and cause the van to do the same.

The van and trailer overturned onto their sides, hitting concrete barriers and pushing three of them into the westbound lanes.

Kayla Hamlin, 30, Osburn, was westbound in a 2004 Dodge Dakota pickup when the displaced concrete barriers struck her vehicle, causing it to crash into a westbound 2008 Four Winds Majestic motorhome driven by Dale Gauer, 65, East Helena, Mont.

Maggio and his passenger, Karen Maggio, 72, Henderson, Nev., were transported to Kootenai Health with minor injuries. Russell was discharged from the emergency room this afternoon. Karen is in fair condition.

Hamlin, Gauer and Gauer's passenger, Mollye Gauer, 65, East Helena, were not injured.

Everyone involved was wearing their seatbelts.

The Idaho Transportation Department responded with a front end loader to replace the concrete barriers.

An investigation continues.
