ELKS HOOP SHOOT

District Hoop Shoot: Five kids will represent the Coeur d’Alene Elks Lodge at the Idaho Hoop Shoot finals on Feb. 4 in Grangeville. The five earned the right to compete at the state level by winning last Saturday’s district championships in Kellogg.

Coeur d’Alene’s Deacon Kiesbuy earned his third straight trip to the state championships in impressive fashion. Kiesbuy was the leadoff shooter in the boys 10-11 year-old age division and shot a perfect 10 of 10 in the first round. Asher Williams and Reed Whatcott hit seven of their first round shots to find themselves in a tie for second.

If there was ever a doubt about the outcome of the competition, Kiesbuy put an end to that with a perfect second round, finishing with 25 points. Whatcott and Williams tied for second at 17 of 25 with Whatcott winning a shoot-off 5 to 2. Wallace’s Landon Streeter took fourth.

Kiesbuy almost didn’t get a chance to compete at districts this year. At the Coeur d’Alene competition, he lost a first place shoot-off with Steven Anderson by a single point. But when Anderson couldn’t make it to districts, Kiesbuy was invited to take his place.

Kiesbuy’s tally was the first perfect score at either the Coeur d’Alene or district competitions in recent memory.

In the girls half of the draw, Coeur d’Alene’s Kamryn Pickford outdistanced the field despite a rough first round. Pickford was tied with Kellogg’s Macy Jerome at 5 of 10 before she kicked it up a notch. At the end of the day, Pickford sank 15 free throws to beat Sandpoint’s Quinn Smith (11 points). Jerome and Wallace’s Britany Phillips tied with 10 points with Phillips getting the third-place trophy after a shoot-off.

In the boys 8-9 age group, Jace Taylor ended the first round with a 9-of-10 showing, easily out-pacing the field. Kellogg’s Draeden Taylor and Sandpoint’s Braden Buckhout each scored five.

In the second round, Jace Taylor cooled a little but still sank 10 shots to finish with 19. With his two opponents needing a perfect second round to pass him, they both fell short. Draeden Taylor ended with 14 points and Buckhout with 11.

Wallace’s Kylee Phillips won the girls 8-9 division, hitting 17 shots to punch her ticket to Grangeville. Sandpoint’s Taren Bateman took second followed by Coeur d’Alene’s Laythia Warner. Kellogg’s Dani Henriksen rounded out the field.

Coeur d’Alene swept the 12-13 age group.

On the girls half of the draw, Alexis Blankenship and Sandpoint’s Daylee Driggs matched each other shot for shot. When Driggs missed her final attempt, it paved the way for Blankenship’s 18-17 victory. Wallace’s Elli Welch took third with 12 points and Kellogg’s Greenly Marek was fourth.

The closest competition was in the boys 12-13 year old division. Coeur d’Alene’s Taylor Menti used two consistent rounds of eight and 13 to score 21 points and take home the top prize. Two shots behind was Sandpoint’s Aric VanDenberg. Kellogg’s Logan Jerome was third with 18 points. Wallace’s Blake Layton took fourth.
