POST FALLS — Effort went a long way for the Post Falls Trojans in making a third straight River City Duals championship at The Arena on Saturday.

Facing Columbia High of Nampa, a team that beat the Trojans 46-21 on Thursday, the Trojans returned the favor with a 40-25 win in the championship dual of the 24-team tourney.

“The biggest difference was our effort,” Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said. “We stepped it up a few notches, and that’s what you’ve got to do when you’re faced with adversity. They knew what was on the line, and we as coaches were really, really pleased to see them respond when challenged.”

Braxton Mason (98 pounds), Brelane Huber (98/106), Ridge Lovett (113/120), Jordan Grimm (113/120), Matt McLeod (126), Jason Burchell (138), Braydon Huber (145), Wyatt Shelly (152), Brad Noesen (220) went unbeaten for Post Falls, which claimed its third-straight team title at the event.

“I think this year was more of a battle than a struggle with the previous two years,” Reardon said. “Those other two teams were just matchups they had, we were the favorite. But because of what happened the other night, with this much of a swing, it makes it better. I just told them to do everything you can, and don’t give an inch of the mat without a fight.”

Alessio Lemmon also went unbeaten for the Post Falls No. 2 team at 126.

Lakeland finished fourth in the gold bracket. The Hawks battled Columbia in the semifinals before losing 35-30, then lost to Kamiakin of Kennewick, Wash., 40-33 in the third-place match.

“The final match we went out flat; I think the kids were just kinda bummed to come so close to Columbia, and fall short,” Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute said. “We gave up quite a few pins that hurt us early in the match (vs. Kamiakin). But overall, I was pretty happy with the kids; we’re still getting better.”

Five Lakeland wrestlers went 5-0 on the weekend — Alex Edelblute (98), Sam Edelblute (106), Tavis Woempner (113), Larry Johnson (138) and Jared Walker (195).

Rob Edelblute also had praise for another of his nephews, William Edelblute, who bumped up a weight to 120 to help give the Hawks a better dual lineup. Edelblute finished 4-1.

Sandpoint finished third in the silver bracket.

In the bronze bracket, Post Falls No. 2 finished second, Priest River third, Timberlake fifth.

Lakeland wrestles at home Tuesday against Bonners Ferry and Priest River. On Friday, Lakeland wrestles Sandpoint at home in the middle event of the basketball/wrestling Battle for the Paddle spirit event at Lakeland.

Post Falls hosts Lewiston on Thursday.

Randles wins

without wrestling

in Rocky Mountain Classic finals

MISSOULA, Mont. — Coeur d’Alene senior Casey Randles won the 182-pound championship without having to step in the spotlight, helping the Vikings to an 11th-place finish at the Jug Beck Rocky Mountain Classic.

Randles won via injury default over Trevor Senn of Mead, who Randles beat in the finals at Tri-State and the Inland Northwest Classic.

Alex Marshall, a 217-pound senior from Coeur d’Alene, finished second by a 5-2 decision at heavyweight to Jeff Queer of Butte.

“It would have been nice to see him again in the spotlight over here, but things happen,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “Alex wrestled a tough kid in the finals. He gave a good effort, but it was hard to score on the guy. He was a legit wrestler, but he had to earn it.”

Isaiah Skinner finished seventh for Coeur d’Alene, which finished 11th.

Griffin Schoch was sixth at 160, Andrew Olvera fourth at 182 and Zane Lettau sixth at 285 for Lake City, which finished tied for 22nd with Ferris.

Flathead High of Kalispell won the team title with 202.5 points.
