Tight at the top

NAMPA — The state 5A wrestling tournament has unfolded just as the two-time champion Post Falls Trojans thought it might.

A little closer than anticipated, but like coach Pete Reardon thought.

Post Falls, with 10 in the semifinals, leads Columbia High of Nampa by two points for the team title after the first day of action at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa.

“We anticpated it was going to be close,” Reardon said. “And I guess it’s falling in line with that.”

Brelane Huber (98 pounds), Braxton Mason (98), Jordan Grimm (113), Ridge Lovett (113), A.J. De La Rosa (120), Matt McLeod (126), Mathias De La Rosa (132), Braydon Huber (145), Tyler Morris (145) and Brad Noesen (220) advanced to the semifinals for Post Falls. But Brelane Huber did not make weight at the end of the night, and will have to forfeit her semifinal with Coeur d’Alene’s Dom Jessos.

“There’s always going to be some good things that happen and bad,” Reardon said. “And for us, it’s been more good than bad.”

Reardon also pointed to a pair of pins by Devine Hill at 106 for keeping the Trojans in the title hunt.

“She had a huge day for us,” Reardon said. “She’s still fighting and looking for the best.”

Columbia has six semifinalists and nine still alive in the consolation bracket. Post Falls has four remaining in the consolation.

“It’s going to be a big round, no doubt,” said Reardon of today’s final consolation round. “They could have a huge round and wind up with 15 placers. It’s going to be a big round for sure.”

Dom Jessos (98 pounds), Hunter Schueller (106), Casey Randles (182), Isaiah Skinner (170) and Alex Marshall (220) advanced to the semifinals for Coeur d’Alene, which is fifth after the first day.

“The kids wrestled hard and did a good job,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “Isaiah probably has the toughest road to the finals, and both Alex and Casey can get there if they do their thing. Both Hunter and Dom have a legit shot also, but just have to show up and wrestle hard. It’s been some tough wrestling, but the kids wrestled really tough.”

Sam Reece (120), Mitchell Moffat (132) and Logan Hendren (285) remain in the hunt in the consolation bracket for Coeur d’Alene.

“We’re sitting nine points out of third right now,” Jeff Moffat said. “I just don’t know if we’ve got a shot to do it (get a trophy), but we’ll have to wrestle well. Everyone we brought down here wrestled hard.”

Lake City will send Rusty Dan (195) and Griffin Schoch (160) to the semifinals. The Timberwolves are 17th.

4A: Lakeland, which is fourth with 82 points, will send six wrestlers to semifinals this morning.

Alex Edelblute (98 pounds), Sam Edelblute (106), William Edelblute (113), Brian Edelblute (126), Larry Johnson (138) and Jared Walker (195) advanced for the Hawks, second last year. Both Johnson and Walker won state titles in 2016 in Pocatello.

Minico leads the team scoring with 133 points.

3A: Brayden Herbert (98) and Isaiah Evans (106) advanced to the semifinals for Timberlake, which is 17th in the team scoring.

Sugar-Salem leads with 104 points.

2A: Dylan Edwards (152) advanced to the semifinals for St. Maries, which is 13th in the team scoring.
