COEUR d’ALENE — Lakeland’s bid for a third straight trip to state fell just short Thursday night, as the top-seeded Moscow Bears held off the Hawks 45-44 in the championship game of the 4A Region 1 boys basketball tournament at North Idaho College’s Rolly Williams Court.

Moscow (8-11), which won its first regional title since 2014, advances to state starting next Thursday at Borah High in Boise.

Lakeland, the two-time defending regional champs, finished 9-14.

“It’s disappointing,” Lakeland assistant coach Bill Ryan said. “I think they (the Bears) definitely earned it; they played really hard.”

Dylan Vahey, one of four juniors (along with a sophomore) who started for Lakeland the last half of the season, hit a 3-pointer with 4 seconds left to pull Lakeland within one. But the Bears were able to inbound the ball and run out the clock before the Hawks could foul.

Soph Josiah Haaland had 10 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots for Lakeland. Junior Dylan Knight scored 10 points and junior Kaden Davis added nine.

Hunter Pickard scored a game-high 16 points for Moscow.

“It was a very physical game; they got into us a little bit,” said Ryan, noting Lakeland was just 4 of 15 from 3-point range.
