A police academy for the people

| February 8, 2017 12:00 AM

Local law enforcement agencies are now accepting applications for the 2017 Multi-Agency Citizens Academy.

The Coeur d’Alene Police Department will host this year’s academy which is sponsored by the Coeur d’Alene, Post Falls, Rathdrum and Spirit Lake police departments, along with the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office.

The Citizens Academy will begin April 4 and conclude June 6. Classes are tentatively scheduled to be held Tuesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. with several Saturday sessions from 8 a.m. to noon and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The purpose of the Citizens Academy is to develop positive relationships between law enforcement and the community through education.

Academy participants learn how law enforcement agencies operate and gain an understanding of the challenges facing law enforcement in this rapidly growing community. The Citizens Academy provides opportunities for open discussions. Participants are encouraged to share comments and ideas regarding problems and solutions. Topics to be covered will include the history of law enforcement in Kootenai County, use of force, how your local police and sheriff’s offices operate, tours of the jail and 911 center, and a demonstration day showcasing police equipment, vehicles and special teams.

To apply, complete an application, which may be found on sponsoring agencies’ websites, Facebook pages, or at their front desks. There is no fee to attend.

You must be at least 18 years old and have no misdemeanor convictions in the past year. If you have a felony conviction, you will not be selected to attend the Citizens Academy.

The sponsoring law enforcement agencies seek to fill the Citizens Academy session with a cross-section of the community.

You will be notified if you are selected to participate in the next academy. Class size is limited and it is also recommended that you turn your application in to the sponsoring agency which has primary jurisdiction of your residence or business.
