COEUR d’ALENE — Kyle Manzardo, Kodie Kolden and Brandon Gay did the job on the mound, and the Lake City Timberwolves got some timely hitting in both games and swept the visiting Post Falls Trojans 5-2 and 4-3 in 5A Inland Empire League play Saturday.

Manzardo and Kolden teamed on a five-hitter in the opener for Lake City (9-7, 4-5 5A IEL). Both had two hits, and Mikey Kelley’s two-run pinch-hit single in the fifth gave the Timberwolves a cushion.

“We played solid baseball,” Lake City coach Paul Manzardo said. “Kyle did a real good job keeping Post Falls off balance. Both of those boys, as well as Nathan Phillips, swung the bat reall well.”

Phillips had two hits, including a two-run double in the second for Lake City.

Jake Pfennigs struck out eight in the opener for Post Falls (12-9, 5-5), and Wyatt Setian hit a solo homer in the fifth to pull the Trojans to within 3-2.

In the second game, McCabe Compton’s two-run double capped a three-run third inning that put Lake City up 4-1.

“Brandon Gay pitched fabulous,” Manzardo said. “He totally kept Post Falls off balance.”

On Tuesday, Post Falls plays host to Lewiston, and Lake City is home vs. Coeur d’Alene, both in doubleheaders.

Lake City will play a makeup game at Coeur d’Alene on Thursday at 4 p.m., after Lewiston plays a makeup game at Coeur d’Alene at 2.

- Earlier this week, Post Falls picked up an additional win when the District 1 Board of Control voted that Coeur d’Alene had to forfeit a 9-3 victory over Post Falls in the second game of a doubleheader April 15.

After the game, Coeur d’Alene self-reported that it had used an ineligible pitcher, as per Idaho’s new pitch-count rules. The pitcher had thrown 85 pitches in a game on Thursday, and was thus ineligible to come back and throw two days later.

The forfeit dropped Coeur d’Alene to 11-7, 3-5 in league.

Sandpoint 9-6

Lakeland 7-1

SANDPOINT — The Hawks and Bulldogs played 2 1/2 games on Saturday, with Lakeland winning the resumption of a game suspended in the bottom of the fourth by rain and darkness on Tuesday, and Sandpoint winning the two regularly scheduled 4A Inland Empire League games.

Billy Brackett went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored in the opener for Sandpoint (6-6, 2-2 4A IEL).

Dylan Bradbury went 3 for 3 for Lakeland (9-8, 5-3).

In the final game, Thomas Riley held Lakeland to one run on six hits, and Jake Cometto went 3 for 3 and scored a pair of runs for Sandpoint.

“This was a pretty tough day for us. With everything that went on this week, I could tell it was really hard for my players to compete at 100 percent,” Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury said. “We just weren’t all there mentally, and it’s totally understandable. We kept battling back and putting some runs up, but then our pitching and/or defense would go awry, and we’d give it right back up. I don’t want to take anything away from Sandpoint because they competed and hit the ball well, but we just didn’t play like us today in the doubleheader.”

In a completion of a suspended game, Bradbury finished off a complete game with seven strikeouts, and also had two hits for Lakeland.

“He’s got such great composure on the mound and just goes out and competes,” Jason Bradbury said.

The game was tied at 2 when it was called. When it resumed, Lakeland scored once in the fourth and twice in the sixth.

Sandpoint plays host to Moscow in a doubleheader on Monday, then travels to Moscow for a twinbill Thursday.
