Super 1 Foods helps 'Take a Bite out of Hunger'
POST FALLS — Super 1 Foods and Charlie’s Produce of Spokane donated more than 3,600 pounds of fresh apples Tuesday to the Post Falls Food Bank to help feed the hungry in the local community. The donation is made as part of the Take a Bite out of Hunger campaign.
FirstFruits Marketing of Washington created the Take a Bite out of Hunger campaign to help feed the underserved while bringing attention to the problem of food insecurity in the United States and Canada. This is Super 1 Foods’ and Charlie’s Produce's third year participating in the campaign.
“We’re proud to give back to our community and participating in Take a Bite Out of Hunger is a great way to make a difference,” said Mike Hernandez, store manager of Super 1 Foods Post Falls. “This donation ... ensures that the shelves at our local food bank are stocked with fresh produce.”
As of 2015, nearly 13 percent of all U.S. households were food-insecure according to the USDA. Of those, households with children reported food insecurity at a higher rate than those without children: 17 percent compared to 11 percent.
More than 1.6 million pounds of fresh apples have been donated to local food banks since Take a Bite out of Hunger’s inception in 2010. Last year alone, more than 350,000 pounds of fresh apples were donated in participating retailers’ names to local food banks in their communities.
