Coeur d'Alene rebounds, splits at Lewiston
- BASEBALL
COEUR d’ALENE — After getting no-hit in the opener, the Coeur d’Alene Vikings rallied late to beat the Lewiston Bengals 3-2 in the second game of a 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader Wednesday at Church Field.
Lewiston, behind Julian Washburn’s six-strikeout, three-walk no-no, won the opener 6-0.
In the second game, Trevor Luckey’s RBI single in the seventh tied it at 2 for Coeur d’Alene (11-3, 3-1 5A IEL). In the eighth, Brady Thompson led off with a single, was sacrificed to second by Brett Kessee, and scored on Carter Friesz’s triple down the right field line.
“Jackson Sumner pitched an absolutely great game,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nick Mahin, noting his seven strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings. “He absolutely pounded the zone, was an absolute Bulldog for us.”
Lewiston is 11-4, 2-2.
Coeur d’Alene plays host to Post Falls on Friday in a doubleheader.

POST FALLS — Quin Bennett pitched a four-hit shutout with six strikeouts as the Trojans beat the visiting Timberwolves in the first game of a 5A Intermountain League doubleheader.
Lake City came back to win the nightcap.
Cameron McKeown had RBI singles in the second and sixth innings of the opener for Post Falls (6-7, 1-3 5A IEL).
“Our pitchers threw really well, especially Quin in the first game,” Post Falls coach Mick Zeller said.
In the second game, Kodie Kolden went 2 for 3 and drove in two runs for Lake City (7-4, 2-2).
“We were so close in the second one,” Zeller said. “Lake City’s runs reached on a walk, walk and hit by pitch. If we don’t give them first base, who knows what happens.”
Lake City coach Paul Manzardo lauded the play of his pitchers in the twinbill.
“They pitched well,” Manzardo said. “Especially Brett Stapleton in the first game. We just couldn’t string any hits together.”
Post Falls plays a doubleheader at Coeur d’Alene on Friday.
Lake City plays host to Lewiston on Saturday in a doubleheader.

“They hit the ball well; their group has been together for a long time, and it shows,” Timberlake coach Cameron Knigge said. “I don’t feel like we played bad; we gave them their first three runs on the little things.”

Sell pitched a one-hitter in the first game and a three-hitter in the nightcap for Coeur d’Alene (6-6, 4-2 5A IEL).
“She was in good control, throwing hard,” Coeur d’Alene coach Darren Taylor said. “Bailee Taylor (who had four hits on the day) was on base both games, causing havoc.”
Coeur d’Alene travels to Missoula on Friday to play Sentinel and Big Sky.
Lewiston is 3-6, 0-4.
