Sumner's slam sends Vikings to 5A IEL sweep

| April 16, 2017 1:00 AM

POST FALLS — Jackson Sumner broke the second game open with a grand slam in the top of the sixth innning as the Coeur d’Alene Vikings swept the Post Falls Trojans 10-5 and 9-3 in the 5A Inland Empire League opener for both schools at Post Falls High on Saturday.

Sumner’s homer came with Coeur d’Alene leading 4-3 in the second game. Jayce Bailey homered in both games for Coeur d’Alene, which improves to 10-2.

“We’d had some good at-bats to load the bases and Jackson put a good swing on the ball,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nick Mahin said. “It was just good team baseball yet again. We didn’t play as sound as I’d like defensively, but they did enough to get a couple of wins. We pitched really well, played great defense and had great approaches at the plate all day.”

Cameron Luckey had six hits on the day for Coeur d’Alene, driving in a combined three runs.

Jake Pfennigs homered twice in the first game for Post Falls.

“They’re doing a lot better job of having good approaches at the plate,” Mahin said of Post Falls. “They’re a scary team and have a lot of talent. They’re starting to mature and figure things out, and it centers around Pfennigs. He’s an incredible talent.”

Coeur d’Alene visits Lewiston on Wednesday for a doubleheader at Church Field.

Post Falls (5-6) hosts Lake City on Tuesday in a doubleheader.
