Melissa Rae Harshman, 36

| September 11, 2016 9:00 PM

Melissa Rae Harshman passed away after an extended illness in her home on Aug. 28, 2016, at the age of 36. Melissa is survived by Geri and Jaime Harshman and her grandfather, Don Harshman. She is preceded in death by her father, Doug Harshman and her grandparents, George and Lillian Gillhoover and Mary Lorraine Harshman.

Melissa entered the world on May 18, 1980. This coincided with the eruption of Mount St. Helens. This could easily represent a metaphor for her life — brimming with spontaneity, enthusiasm and passion. She was born in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, to Doug and Geri Harshman. She was the first Harshman family member with piercing blue eyes!

Melissa graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School in 1998. She moved on to study graphic design at North Idaho College, obtaining a graphic design degree in 2001. Melissa continued to reside in Coeur d’Alene. Her skills and passion in graphic design and photo editing were a gift to several local companies. The most recent of which was Blue Dog RV. In this position, she was meticulous in her role as Web Administrator.

As a child, Melissa loved Tonka trucks, matchbox cars, GI Joes and Legos. She immensely disliked anything frilly and girly. She had a passion for animals and often brought strays home — much to her parents’ dismay. She refused to step on ants or harm other creatures and had impeccable respect for anything living. Not having children, she put her maternal devotion toward her dogs. Her rescued dog, Loondi, was by her side when she passed.

She was a gifted artist, filling sketchbooks with drawings and designs, and passionately and methodically approached any creative challenge. Melissa shared her passion of gardening with her mom and sister, inheriting the gift of a green thumb. She created a sanctuary in her home filled with things she loved and treasured most. She was fascinated by astrology and astronomy, and had an impressive knowledge of historical events, particularly ancient civilizations.

Melissa was an avid Seahawks fan — even leaving this world wearing her treasured Marshawn Lynch jersey. She shared this passion with her mom, anxiously waiting for each season to begin. Melissa was extremely close to her mom and sister — they talked daily. Her older sister, Jaime, will remember the importance of living life to the fullest, perseverance, as well as a heart for compassion. Her mom, Geri, will remember how to appreciate the small things in life, and to have empathy and compassion for those who struggle.

Caring and compassionate to strangers, fierce loyalty to friends, and protective of her family and friends were the epitome of her character. Melissa had touched so many, leaving unforgettable and precious memories behind. She was incredibly funny, sharp and quick-witted. She blessed those around her with her humor and jokes. Melissa had an extended hospitalization in winter 2015, and struggled to regain her full health since that time. Her family is comforted that Melissa is now looking over her loved ones, full of peace and finally pain-free.

Her life will be celebrated by a memorial service at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, 2016, at Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d’Alene Chapel. A reception will follow at the Shilo Inn at 11:30 a.m. All are welcome to attend to celebrate Melissa’s life. You are encouraged to wear your Seahawks gear.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to her memorial donation site: www.gofundme.com/2n4zdry4. Condolences can be sent to www.yatesfuneralhomes.com. The family would like to thank all those who have supported them during this difficult time.
