STATE CROSS COUNTRY MEETS: Cd'A Charter's Chang a winner in first year in sport

| October 30, 2016 9:15 PM

POCATELLO — At this time last year, Landon Chang was wrapping up his soccer season at Lake City High with a third-place finish in the 2015 state 5A tournament.

Still a student at Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy, and opting to give cross country a try as a senior, Chang wrapped up his fall sports a little differently this time around.

A champion.

Chang broke the tape in 16 minutes, 39.90 seconds at the Portneuf Wellness Center to win the 3A boys race for Charter in its first year after moving up from the 2A classification.

“By the time I saw the finish line, I was giving it all I had from that point on,” said Chang, who added that running the meet at altitude took a bit out of him. “I didn’t feel the elevation as much on the hills and the course. I was almost at the 2-mile mark and thought to myself, ‘this is really hard. It shouldn’t be this hard.’”

3A: Coeur d’Alene Charter finished third, one year after finishing second in the 2A race at Farragut State Park in Athol.

“The course was much worse today than last year,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Jim McPhilomy said. “Farragut had a little more gravel, but this course, it was much softer ground and difficult to run a fast time. I just told the boys to put themselves in a position to bring a trophy home.”

Chang, who joined the track and field program at Coeur d’Alene Charter last spring, was surprised by his finish in his first year of the sport.

“I didn’t really have any idea coming into the race,” Chang said. “In the north, we’re kind of cut off from the southern part of the state since it takes nine hours to get here, so I really didn’t know what to expect.”

“It was a hard race,” McPhilomy said. “It looked like the altitude got to everyone from the north. After that first mile, you could see it setting in on us. But our guys gutted it out. Landon went out hard from the start, and with the way he started, had it gone much further, they might have caught him. The course was tougher than we were expecting. Had it been a sunny day, it could have been a faster course, but the ground was soft and it takes a toll on you.”

Chang opted to run cross country after playing on the varsity soccer team at Lake City as a sophomore and junior.

“I just kind of felt burnt out from soccer,” Chang said. “I thought that since I’d ran track in the spring, I might as well run cross country. It was for sure a good choice.”

Timberlake senior Landon Davis finished seventh in 17:17.80, Coeur d’Alene Charter’s Jackson Ricks 13th in 17:36.30 to round out 3A boys medalists for finishing in the top 20.

Timberlake sophomore Abigil Peightal was the top local finisher, coming in eighth in 20:43.25, with teammates Savannah Caudle — a junior — 17th in 21:40.13 and senior Kassidy Hammond 18th in 21:47.53, helping the Tigers finish third.

Payton Drollinger won the 3A girls race, helping Shelley claim the team title. Sugar-Salem won the boys team championship.

5A: Coeur d’Alene senior Alex Walde was the top local finisher, 14th in 16:57.92. The Viking boys finished 10th out of 11 teams.

Rocky Mountain of Meridian won the boys title.

Lewiston’s Austin Byrer was the individual champion, winning in 15:58.3.

Post Falls freshman Sydney Shanahan was the top local girls finisher, coming in 27th in 20:25.87.

Freshman Lexy Halladay of Mountain View won the girls race in 18:10.27, leading the Mavericks to the team title.

4A: Sandpoint’s Katherine Kaul and Hannah Davidson finished 14th and 15 respectively, leading the Bulldog girls to a fifth-place finish in the 4A race.

Lakeland’s Cooper Haney was the top local boys finisher, coming in 27th.

2A: Soda Springs swept team titles in the 2A race. No locals qualified for the race.

1A: Logos (boys) and Deary (girls) won team titles in the second year of the 1A race. No locals qualified for the race.
