PREP CROSS COUNTRY: Post Falls girls nab 5A Region 1 title

Ida Mae Brooks finished second in 20 minutes, 9.3 seconds, followed by teammates Sydney Shanahan (20:17.8) and Jazzmin Kernodle (20:25.8) as the Post Falls Trojans claimed the 5A Region 1 girls team title on Thursday at Farragut State Park in Athol.

Post Falls edged Coeur d’Alene by three points for the team title. Both teams advanced to the state 5A meet next Saturday at the Portneuf Wellness Center in Pocatello.

Alex Walde was the top local finisher Coeur d’Alene High, finishing third in the boys race in 16:39.7.

The top two teams and nine individuals in each race advanced to state.

Lakeland sophomore Isabelle Kirk was the lone local qualifer for state, finishing ninth in 21:25.2 in the 4A Region 1 girls race at Farragut State Park in Athol.

Lakeland senior Cooper Haney finished fourth in 17 minutes, .8 seconds to qualify for the state 4A meet next Saturday at the Portneuf Wellness Center in Pocatello.

Landon Chang (16 minutes, 31.2 seconds), Jackson Ricks (17:19.9) and Jacob Shoup (17:33.3) of Coeur d’Alene Charter were the first three across the finish line, helping the Panthers claim the district title at the Ranch Club in Priest River.

Coeur d’Alene Charter had 29 points, clipping Timberlake for the team title in its first year in the 3A classification. Coeur d’Alene Charter finished runner-up in the state 2A meet in 2015 at Farragut State Park.

Abigail Peightal of Timberlake won the girls race in 20:12.3, helping the Tigers win the team title.

The top 21 individual boys and 11 girls qualified for the state 3A meet at the Portneuf Wellness Center.

Grangeville’s Adam Wonnacott — who won in 18 minutes, 28.8 seconds — and teammate Justin Detwiler, who finished in 20:09.4, were the only two racers in the 2A District 1-2 meet at the Grangeville Golf Course.

Kootenai junior Justin Keogh was the lone local state qualifier, finishing 19th in 20 minutes, 19 seconds at the 1A District 1-2 meet at the Grangeville Golf Course.

Logos (boys) and Deary (girls) won team titles.

Cole Olsen of Clearwater Valley won the boys race in 17:35.7 and Maisie McManus of Deary won the girls race in 23:01.4.

The top 21 boys finishers and 13 girls finishers advance to state next Saturday at the Portneuf Wellness Center in Pocatello.
