A popular musical comedy with a 1960s sci-fi film flair opens today in downtown Coeur d’Alene.

Produced by the new Aspire Community Theatre, “Little Shop of Horrors” will be performed in the Eagles Ballroom, 209 E. Sherman Ave.

The show will run through Sunday, Oct. 30 with performances at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Tickets are $12-$15 and can be purchased online at aspirecda.com. Discounted group rates are available.

“Little Shop of Horrors,” was written by Broadway legends Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, a team that produced Disney classics: “The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” and “Beauty and the Beast.”

The play is based on the 1960 film by Roger Corman, and centers around Seymour Krelborn, a resident of Skid Row, an unidentified U.S. downtown slum. Krelborn, a lowly worker in Mr. Mushnik’s florist shop, happens upon a “weird and exotic” plant one day, and finds caring for Audrey II to be a bit more than he bargains for. Audrey II, named after Seymour’s crush and coworker, Audrey, grows into a phenomenon beyond Krelborn’s meek existence. A 1986 film based on the play was rated PG-13.

The show opening tonight is the first main stage production by Aspire Community Theatre, a new local theater company led by Trigger Weddle. Weddle has directed, choreographed and performed in many local productions. She is a teacher and choreographer at Northern Dance Academy and has served as an adjunct theatre instructor at North Idaho College.
