Frieda K. Gordon, 98

| October 20, 2016 9:00 PM

Frieda K. Gordon, 98, passed on Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016, at Life Care Center of Coeur d’Alene after a brief illness.

She leaves four children — Ella Gordon (Boise, Idaho), Glenn Gordon and wife Jeannie (Athol, Idaho), Ernie Gordon and wife Debra (Apollo Beach, Fla.), and Lillian McPoland and husband Brian (Hauser Lake, Idaho); seven grandchildren — Benjamin McPoland, Samuel McPoland, Stephen McPoland and John McPoland (Hayden and Spokane area), Cassandra Gordon (Apollo Beach), Tristan Stowe (Hayden) and Michelle Gordon (Sagle); three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Frieda was preceded in death by her husband, Ben Gordon; son Gene Gordon and all nine of her siblings.

She was born and raised in the Purewater, Mont., area to Christian and Christina (Bauer) Ackermann, German immigrants from Russia, and then moved to Hayden Lake as a young woman with her family in 1937. She was the youngest of 10 children, nine brothers and one sister. She married Ben in March 1947 and they moved to a homestead of 80 acres in the Dalton Gardens area. They farmed the acreage, had a huge garden, raised chickens and milk cows — selling eggs, cream and milk to local creameries and individuals. Frieda was a hard worker, raising five children and taking care of her father, canning vegetables and farm-raised meat to feed her family during the winter, washing all the milking equipment including the milk jars, and delivering the eggs, produce, milk and cream to the local creamery.

Frieda enjoyed going to dances on Saturday night with Ben to area grange halls, Eagles and Ivalee, taking bus trips to Reno and Jackpot, Nev., a few times a year, playing bingo — always hoping for that “one number,” playing rummy with the grandkids and friends, and buying scratch-off lottery tickets. She was very lucky and would win. You would frequently find her shopping at the local grocery stores and she was loved by every employee. One of her favorite pastimes was crocheting afghan blankets in her later years.

She was an avid reader of the Coeur d’Alene Press and kept her family informed of the local happenings. She was a long-term member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Coeur d’Alene and a lifelong member of the Eagles.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 21, 2016, at Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d’Alene Chapel, 744 N. Fourth St., Coeur d’Alene. Immediately following the service, there will be a memorial at Coeur d’Alene Memorial Gardens.

Memorial donations are suggested to the Trinity Lutheran Church Building Fund, 812 N. Fifth St., Coeur d’Alene, ID 83814.
