WATER POLO

Coeur d’Alene High club team wins fourth straight state title: The Coeur d’Alene High Water Polo ‘A’ Club succeeded in defending its state championship in Boise last Saturday. The team has won the state championship each of the four years it has been in existence. In the B division, the Coeur d’Alene B team also won by going undefeated in the tournament.

Each team played a total of 5 games, with the first three games being preliminary games for seeding in the championship rounds. In the first game on Friday, the top CHS squad outscored Mountain View 11-3. Later that evening, the CHS club played a close match with a good Twin Falls team but pulled ahead late in the game to forge an 11-6 victory. On Saturday, the Vikings played Bishop Kelly in the first game of the morning and won 17-2 score.

In the championship rounds, CHS again played Bishop Kelly and won 19-3. CHS then moved on to play Twin Falls in the championship match. The Vikings scored the first eight goals with a series of shots primarily from Tom Loftus and Ryan Butera. Twin Falls was able to score a few goals later in the game but was not able to overcome the strong shooting of CHS or the excellent defense led by goalie Josh Simmons. The Vikings finished the game with a final score of 12-5.

Tom Loftus had the most goals in the top bracket with 24. Rylan Butera of CHS was second overall with 17 goals. A number of other CHS players contributed to the scoring, including Wyatt Surplus with 9, and Ryan Sorensson and Gabe Markowski with eight goals each. Danielle Chastain led the women’s scoring with four goals. Wyatt Surplus provided the core of the defense by playing the hole defensive position and made scoring difficult for all of the teams the Vikings played. Josh Simmons was the goalie and provided excellent support with numerous saves throughout the tournament to help secure the wins. Tom Loftus, Rylan Butera and Gabe Markowski also contributed a number of critical steals and assists throughout the tournament. Hanna Dansereau and Amelie Beresford-Wood provided strong defensive support, while Amelie sustained 11 exclusions throughout the tournament.

In the B division, CHS squad played games against Bishop Kelly, Mountain View and Twin Lakes. In their opening match, CHS ran to a 20-2 victory over Bishop Kelly. The team then played a very tough match against a combined Mountain View team, with Mountain View leading during much of the game. The Vikings fought back in the third and fourth quarters and prevailed 10-8. This was followed by a final preliminary round game with Twin Falls in which CHS repeatedly score on counter-attacks and raced to a final score of 14-3. In the semifinal game, CHS was again matched against Twin Falls and won 13-5. The team then went on to play a hard-fought championship match in which the combined Mountain View team took an early 6-3 lead. However, the Vikings were able to work their way back to 8-8 tie late in the fourth period. The teams then traded goals, including a tying score by Caiden Hartfield. After a couple more minutes of swimming and attempted shots, Andrew Hangar made the winning score with 26 seconds left in the game. Caleb Simmons took goalie duties with many critical stops. Andrew Hangar led the team in scoring with a breakout performance, scoring a total of 23 goals. Other scoring highlights for CHS included Caiden Hartfield (16), Caleb Markowski (14), Levi Davidson (8), Sarah McNeil (2) and both Mikayla Oswald and Ben Alva with 1 goal each.

The Vikings were coached by Mark Collingham and Peter Neirinckx. Collingham noted the CHS squad had just four seniors.

“Our younger players have made huge improvements this year, without their help we would not have been able to win,” he said. “The team continues to grow and we hope to have an even stronger team next year. We also are looking to recruit players from other local high schools who are interested in joining the sport.”
