PREP FOOTBALL: St. Maries takes step, beats Grangeville

GRANGEVILLE — The special season for the St. Maries continued for another Friday night as Jake Sieler scored on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Kiefer Gibson in the second quarter — the lone score on a wet night — as the Lumberjacks beat the Grangeville Bulldogs 8-0 in the Central Idaho League opener for both schools.

It is the first win for St. Maries (7-0) over Grangeville (3-4) since dropping from the 3A Intermountain League to the 2A Central Idaho League in 2012.

Bryant Asbury set up the only score in the ballgame with an interception return for 40 yards.

St. Maries (7-0) also had two key defensive stops inside its own 20 in the first half.

The Lumberjacks outgained Grangeville 173-138.

St. Maries hosts Orofino in a Central Idaho League game on Oct. 21.

Grangeville visits Orofino next Friday.

MOSCOW — Jard Cysewski caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Logan Siegford in overtime on the opening possession of overtime, and the Hawks stopped the Bears on their second snap on the ensuing possession for a 4A Inland Empire League win.

Josh Brandt recovered a fumble on a missed snap on Moscow’s second play of the Kansas City tiebreaker to end the game.

Owen Dickens intercepted a pass on the 10-yard line for Lakeland, stopping a go-ahead drive late in the fourth quarter by Moscow.

Lakeland tied the game with 1:30 remaining as Andrew Neilson scored on a 38-yard touchdown run on an end-around.

“It was a heck of a finish,” Lakeland assistant coach Ryan Scaggs said. “We’re proud of how the guys found a way to win tonight.”

Lakeland (4-3) hosts Sandpoint next Friday at Corbit Field.

Moscow is 2-5.

SPIRIT LAKE — Ryan Stevens had a pair of interception returns for touchdowns in the fourth quarter as the Tigers moved past the Badgers in the Intermountain League opener for both at Van Tuinstra Memorial Stadium.

Caleb Munson ran for 159 yards and a touchdown for Timberlake (1-6), which travels to Priest River next Friday.

Brandon Hausladen had 79 yards, including a 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter for Timberlake.

Nick Saban scored on 5-yard run for Bonners Ferry, which travels to Kellogg next Friday.

HARRISON FLATS — Blake Marker and Mason Hewitt each scored two touchdowns for the Tigers in a White Star league rout of the Warriors.

“They’re big, strong and fast,” Kootenai coach Doug Napierala said. “I’ve been dealing with some injuries and moving kids around. We just could not compete, but Kendrick is priming themselves from a good, deep playoff run. They really took it to us tonight.”

Running back Tanner Anderson had 45 yards on eight carries for Kootenai (3-3, 2-3 WSL), which travels to Deary next Friday

Marker ran for a 51-yard TD and tacked on a 48-yard reception in the first quarter for Kendrick (5-1, 4-0).
