Modern Theater brings back 'All is Calm'

| November 25, 2016 8:00 PM

In 1914, at the Western front, out of the violence came a silence… then a song. A German soldier stepped into No Man’s Land singing “Stille Nacht.”

Thus begins an extraordinary night of camaraderie, music and peace. A remarkable true experience, told in the words and songs of the men who lived it.

“All is Calm” opens today and runs through Christmas Eve at the Modern Theater Spokane, 174 S. Howard St.

Show times are 7:30 p.m. curtain Thursday through Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday matinee. Doors open a half-hour prior to curtain.

Director Abbey Crawford has assembled an all-male cast of singers for this poignant epistolary tale. The mix of songs, all sung a cappella, range from war tunes like “Keep the Home Fires Burning” to holiday carols in other languages, such as “O Tannenbaum” in German and “O Holy Night” in French.

“The happenings within the show are just as relevant today as they were 102 years ago. The story is of these men who were sent forth to fight each other for their countries, but treated as numbers,” Crawford said, in a press release. “During the night of Dec. 24, 1914, these men decided to trust in the good will of humans. If you consider what is happening in the world today, if we actually treated each other as a race of humans, rather than a race if opinions, the world would be a much more peaceful place. This show is what the true spirit of Christmas is about: loving your fellow man, and granting grace for all, no matter your race, religion, or beliefs.”

Modern Theater Coeur d’Alene will present the family-friendly “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” Dec. 2-18.

Tickets for either show are available at www.themoderntheater.org or by calling (509) 455-7529.
