NIC ROUNDUP: Meyer wins, nine Cardinals place at tourney
WRESTLING
SPOKANE — Freshman Trey Meyer won the 165-pound title for North Idaho College, and nine Cardinals placed Sunday in the Spokane Open at the Spokane Convention Center.
Meyer, from East Valley High, went 5-0, winning three times by major decision and twice by decision, capped by an 8-3 victory over Brandon Davidson of Eastern Oregon in the finals.
“It came down to the last 45 seconds,” NIC coach Pat Whitcomb said. “He was down one, and he took a good shot, cradled him up and almost pinned him. He had a good solid day.”
Alex Aguilar (174) of NIC was second; “Boony” Merryweather (197) was third; Thomas Stevenson (149) and Cooper Thomas (285) each took fourth; Whatt Butler (165) and Damian Trujillo (285) each finished fifth; and Dusty Jones (165) and Cooper McCullough (149) both took sixth.
Trujillo, Jones and McCullough all wrestled unattached for NIC. Butler beat Jones in the match for fifth and sixth.
Aguilar won his first four matches before losing by major decision in the finals.
Merryweather went 5-1. In the third round of consolations, he defeated Haszell West of Clackamas 11-8, avenging a loss to him just two days earlier in a dual at NIC. West placed third at the NJCAA tournament last year.
“That’s got to give him some confidence,” Whitcomb said.
NIC returns to action in two weeks, traveling to Las Vegas to face Western Wyoming on Dec. 1, a tuneup for the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational Dec. 2-3.

CHANDLER, Ariz. — The Cardinals finished their season-opening stretch of three games in three days with their first victory of their season — and first since moving to the Northwest Athletic Conference after some four decades as an NJCAA school.
“Good solid game,” NIC coach Chris Carlson said. “We were able to take a lead, and were able to beat them back a couple of times (when Chandler-Gilbert rallied). We just finished the game really well.”
Carlson praised the play of NIC freshman Cierra Dvorak, the former Lake City High standout.
“Cierra Dvorak just had a great weekend,” Carlson said. “She ran the point, controlled the tempo and handled pressure. They pressed us the whole game, and she did real well. She was a big part of our success.”
NIC (1-2) returns to action on Saturday at home against the Idaho All-Stars, a collection of former area standouts.
