Rountree loves Rathdrum and Rathdrum loves her
The Rathdrum Chamber of Commerce didn’t have to look far to find the 2016 Rathdrum Citizen of the Year.
Shanie Rountree, the chamber’s events and membership director, received the honor Saturday during the chamber’s 24th Annual Awards Dinner at the Coeur d’Alene Shrine Club.
“I do what I do because I love Rathdrum. I love our businesses and I love you,” Rountree said to the dozens of people clapping and cheering for her from around tables in the banquet hall.
Joan Genter, president of the chamber board, said Rountree received several nominations for the award which is given to a community member whose time and energy have improved, beautified and bettered the city of Rathdrum.
Rountree, with the chamber since 2013, was noted for her tireless efforts in bringing public awareness to Rathdrum’s business community. She organizes, helps coordinate and promotes a wide array of activities, including ribbon cuttings, open houses, Rathdrum Days and December D’lights.
“Her resourceful use of a newsletter, calendar of events and website keeps people informed and positively impacts the Rathdrum community. Her attention to ‘buy local first’ encourages local prosperity, supports community groups and helps create local jobs,” wrote Larry Clark, Northern Lakes Fire Protection District Commissioner, in his nomination.
Clark said Rountree works hard to promote the local businesses and spread the word that Rathdrum is a great place to work, live and shop.
“Her attention to detail and helpfulness means that no one is confused or missing details about event dates, times and requirements. It takes a lot of effort to coordinate, direct and accurately provide this information and she always does it in a pleasant and positive way,” Clark wrote.
Eric Singer, Rathdrum Parks and Recreation Director, was named Professional of the Year for his oversight of youth activities and care of the city’s parks.
“He is always available, and goes above and beyond, to help the chamber in any way, from working tirelessly to ensure our community events ... to fixing issues with the chamber building. He’s even ready with a jump start if need be,” said Genter, when announcing Singer’s award.
Frank and Marge Bega received the Community Volunteer of the Year Award for their work supporting the chamber. They donate their time to announce and judge in the Rathdrum Days Parade, and are active members of the Rathdrum Lions Club who assist with many community service efforts like the nutritional backpack program and the vision and hearing testing of elementary school children in the public schools.
Rathdrum Police Department received a Special Recognition Award.
“They protect, serve and make us safer by their unselfish duty. They are committed to enhancing the safety and security of the community by providing professional law enforcement,” Genter said.
Kelsey’s Bar was named Business of the Year for its frequent support of charitable causes. The bar was noted for holding fundraisers and benefits for nonprofit programs and community members in need.
