Cd'A's Curtis, Dietz capture state titles

| November 7, 2016 8:00 PM

BOISE — Coeur d’Alene High juniors Cole Curtis and Emily Dietz won state championships Saturday at the state high school swim meet at the Boise City Aquatics Center.

Curtis won the boys 100-yard breaststroke, and Dietz captured the girls 100 backstroke.

Coeur d’Alene’s boys, the two-time defending state champions, finished second to Boise. Boise totaled 329 points, Coeur d’Alene 231.

Boise also won the girls title. Coeur d’Alene was fifth.

“The team swam hard and posted many best times,” Coeur d’Alene coach Rich Swoboda said. “Excellent finish for the boys and girls. Anytime you finish in the top five out of 72 teams, thats a strong team.

“Boise is going to be tough to beat. They brought twice as many state qualifiers to the meet over the second-largest team (Coeur d’Alene). In order to compete with that we are going to need more pool space — competitive pool space is maxed — to allow our year-round club teams to grow.”

Coeur d’Alene junior Gabe Markowski finished second in the boys 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Teammate Karter Rasmussen, a sophomore, was third in the 500 freestyle. Coeur d’Alene was also second in the 200 medley relay and third in the 200 freestyle relay.

Post Falls junior Ian Rector was fourth in the boys 100 backstroke and fifth in the 200 individual medley.

Lake City sophomore Aren Kariotis was fifth in the boys 50 freestyle, seventh in the 100 butterfly, and also swam on the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay, both of which placed in the top eight.
