NIC ROUNDUP: Cards sweep Treasure Valley

COEUR d’ALENE — Halle Hess had eight kills, Zoia Basargain had seven kills and Brittany Gay had 37 assists as North Idaho College swept the Treasure Valley Chukars 25-11, 25-18, 25-21 in a Northwest Athletic Conference match at Christianson Gym on Friday night, clinching at least a tie for the East Region title in the school’s first year in the conference.
“The girls enjoyed playing and made sure to go out with a ‘W’,” NIC coach Kelsey Stanley said. “We’re looking forward to next week to really get after practice and make sure we are ready to go for the NWAC Championships.”
NIC (19-11, 14-2 NWAC) concluded the regular season with the win on Friday and can clinch the conference title with a loss by Walla Walla at Treasure Valley on Wednesday.
Hess had 12 digs and Zuri Meehan had 11 digs for NIC, which is off until the NWAC Championships Nov. 17-20 at the Tacoma Convention Center.
Elisha Paris had eight kills and Abby Nonnenmacher 14 assists for Treasure Valley (9-20, 2-12).

BURNABY, British Columbia — Garrett White (125 pounds) and Trey Meyer (165) picked up wins by pin for the Cardinals in a victory against the Clan of the NAIA.
Thomas Stevenson (149) and Brent Evans (157) had wins by major decision for NIC, which improved to 2-1 on the season. Meyer pinned former NIC standout Tyler McLean in 4 minutes, 16 seconds in their 165-pound bout.
“After last night (a 33-3 win at Highline), this was a tough team, but it was good to see them win some of the close matches,” NIC coach Pat Whitcomb said. “It was a good all-around showing by the team.”
NIC competes in the Mike Clock Open on Sunday in Forest Grove, Ore.
