COEUR d’ALENE — The Lt. George Farragut Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is inviting students, grades five through 12, to participate in two different essay contests.

This year’s American History Essay Contest topic is “Celebrating a Century: America’s National Parks.” Students are to pretend they are writing a journal while visiting one of the 58 national parks.

The Christopher Columbus Essay Contest is open to ninth- through 12th-graders. The topic is “Technology’s Impact on the Voyage of Christopher Columbus.” Students are to show how some of the technology we have in 2016 might have changed the planning and execution of Columbus’s voyages.

Students in public, private or parochial schools, as well as homeschoolers, are eligible. Teachers are encouraged to integrate the contests into their curriculum.

Certificates will be issued to all who participate. Monetary awards are given to the chapter winners from each grade in the American History contest and the chapter winner for the Christopher Columbus contest. First place winners advance to the state competition.

The deadline is Dec. 20, 2016. Participants are encouraged to contact Connie McGee at (208) 667-8299 or email Lt. George Farragut Chapter at ltgeorgefarragut@gmail.com for more information on essay requirements and to obtain the address for submitting essays.
