SPOKANE — Former Lake City High standout Monique Queen opened the scoring in the 49th minute for North Idaho College in a 3-0 opening round win against the Green River Gators in the Northwest Athletic Conference tournament on Wednesday at Spokane Falls Community College.

“We were still coming off some nerves and it really took us a while to get into the rythmn of the game,” NIC coach Dan Hogan said. “We created some chances on goal and I knew if we stuck to what we were doing, they’d eventually come.”

Emily Aspden scored in the 58th minute and Sterling Healy in the 67th for NIC, with both assisted by former Coeur d’Alene High standout Meg Lowery.

“Madeline Roberts did a good job in the midfield today,” Hogan said. “She’s kind of our engine that gets the ball to the right people. She doesn’t lose possession a lot. We’re happy to be moving on. It was good to get the first one, even with having to play the first game and will help prepare us for our match against Clark.”

Green River finished 11-5-3.

NIC (13-2-3) will play at Clark College of Vancouver, Wash., in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

First half — none. Second half — 1, NIC, Monique Queen (unassisted), 49:00. 2, NIC, Emily Aspden (Meg Lowery), 58:00. 3, NIC, Sterling Healy (Lowery), 67:00.

SPOKANE — Christian Guzman scored an unassisted goal in the 48th minute as the Raiders beat the Cardinals in an opening round game in the Northwest Athletic Conference tournament at Spokane Falls Community College.

NIC won four of its last five games in the regular season to finish with the season seed out of the East Region.

NIC finishes 7-9-4.

“We were good in possession, but struggled to get quality chances,” NIC coach Ken Thompson said. “Being the home team and higher seed, our expectations were a little bit higher. We settled down a little bit in the first half, and I’m proud of what the guys did in the last 11 games after a rough start. We’ve used a lot of different lineups with some guys out, and I’m proud of what the guys did to get back into it. With the right bounce today, we’re pretty close to pushing it to overtime.”

First half — none. Second half — 1, Pierce, Christian Guzman (unassisted), 48:00.
